2016 New Year’s Resolutions for Seniors

2015 is drawing to a close, which means it’s time for reviewing a year’s worth of accomplishments, challenges, and joys while contemplating how to make the next year even better. Here are 4 resolutions from caregivers in Milwaukee for seniors who want to make 2016 a healthier and more fulfilling year. 

1. Take a Walk Every Day

Even a 20-minute walk each day can do wonders for your health. A brisk walk each morning or evening has been shown to increase cardiovascular endurance among seniors while building muscle to reduce the risk of falling. A daily walk can also help seniors reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Don’t assume that the lost stamina and strength associated with getting older are unavoidable. Both are caused, in part, by reduced physical activity.

2. Eat More Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

While seniors are usually better than their younger counterparts at eating more fruits and vegetables, that still isn’t saying much. According to Milwaukee home care agencies, just 30 percent of seniors get the recommended serving of fruits and vegetables each day. Aim for at least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, which is the minimum you should get to support good health and lower your risk for heart disease, digestive problems, eye problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health concerns. 

3. Learn How to Use New Technology

Did you know seniors are the fastest growing demographic on social media sites like Facebook? While it can be a little intimidating, learning to text, use social media, email, and video chat can help you keep in touch with loved ones who are far away. It’s also an easy way to stay connected and avoid the social isolation and feelings of loneliness not uncommon among seniors.

4. Fall-Proof Your Home

One out of every three seniors experiences a fall every year, according to the CDC, and falls are a leading cause of injuries among seniors. Most falls occur in the home, but many can be prevented. Don’t put off making your home safer. Take the time to eliminate trip hazards like throw rugs and extension cords, add night lights to each room, and have grab bars installed in the bathroom to make your home as safe as possible so you can age in place comfortably.
